North Carolina Senate Apologizes for Slavery

According to the AP, the North Carolina Senate apologized Thursday for the Legislature's role in promoting slavery and Jim Crow laws.

I had no idea that anyone from the North Carolina Senate owned slaves. I was certain that this has been illegal since 1865. My question is simple. If these people had slaves, why weren't they arrested?

Bad jokes aside, why does this continue to come up in politics? How does it benefit anyone alive today? If you did not commit the act, you cannot apologize for the act. If it did not happen to you, you cannot accept the apology. Lawmakers need to focus on doing their jobs, not passing "feel good" legislation and resolutions.
