Who Is This Ron Paul?

It seems as though every Presidential campaign has it’s wildcard candidate that stirs things up and directs the campaign season in a whole new direction. This election season is no different. In the Republican primary battle, we have many well known names and faces, but one candidate in particular has gotten very little press coverage. Texas Congressman Ron Paul has amassed more money than Senator John McCain, but polls far lower than the “top tier” candidates. His supporters are very vocal about his constitutionalist ideals, and many take offense if his name is left out of any discussion of Presidential politics.

I would like to take a closer look at the Texan OB/GYN turned congressman. Paul has a record of consistency of only voting along constitutional lines, not party lines. He has stated that if it is not in the Constitution then he will not support it. He has been a strong advocate on Pro-life issues, gun ownership rights, and fiscal responsibility. With positions like these and his apparent fund raising abilities, one would surmise that Paul would be mentioned with the likes of Giuliani, Romney, and McCain. I believe the issues that separate Dr. Paul from the rest of the Republican field are his views on how and when the military should be used.

He voted against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act, which by the way certain front runners on the Democratic ticket are unable to say, and has been calling for the return of our troops. He wants the return of our troops not only from Iraq, but also from every other foreign station around the globe. He holds firm to the warning from George Washington when he left office, saying that we should not become involved in the affairs of other nations. I personally believe that the world is a much more dangerous place than the one in which Washington lived. During the colonial period, it could take months for a foreign invader to reach us. With the technological advancements of our time, a foreign government could send one agent with a nuclear device across our borders to slaughter millions of our citizens. We cannot afford to pull our troops home from around the globe. We are the lone superpower in the world and with that comes a responsibility to help protect the defenseless.

We can all argue about the merits of going to war in Iraq and whether or not there were ever weapons of mass destruction, but one simple fact remains, we are there now and we must see this to its end. The Democrats and certain Republicans, including Ron Paul, are calling for us to bring our troops home now, but the sad little secret is that even if one of them wins in November of ’08, the troops will not, let me say that again for my “intellectual” friends, will not be spirited home by the middle of February of ’09. None of these candidates will sign off on that. They all know that it will create a bloodbath of the kind that has not been seen since we pulled all of our troops out of Vietnam. Although they would like nothing more than to saddle the Bush administration with that legacy, they are still human enough to do what is necessary to prevent the needless murder of millions.

While reading about Ron Paul, I realized that I share many of his same views on a majority of his issues, but I also realized that there are certain issues that are more important. I cannot in good conscience support his candidacy based on his positions about the use of military force. He is completely correct when he says that we should never send our troops into war without a declaration of war from the Congress. Unfortunately, in our politically charged times, we do not have a Congress that is mature enough to take the responsibility of such a declaration. They would rather shirk their responsibility off to the President, so that they may feign surprise and disgust at the President’s hunger for war. We live in a very dangerous world and at times we do need to preemptively strike to preserve our freedom and the freedom of our friends around the world.

  • Thanks for taking him seriously. All too often I come across nothing but smears and insults to the man. At least you stated why you you disagree with him.
The problem I have now with preemption is our unfortunate invasion of Iraq. We've wasted so much money and so many troops and all that's gonna be left is another totalitarian/islamist regime. I'd rather just defend the home turf, unless there exists actual evidence that we are in immediate danger.

  • oxcqacDr. Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel & veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!

A true Patriot defends freedom, liberty, and the Constitution. Illegal and unnecessary wars do not promote freedom and liberty. We have far more success trading with Vietnam (as we do now) then we did with bombing them. And yes there was bloodshed when we left Vietnam but it was less bloodshed then when we were bombing Vietnam.

Ron Paul is 1st in YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.

Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.

Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were doing about the same in the 'Scientific Polls' at this stage in their elections. ‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage only measure name recognition. Over the next six months Ron Paul will gain name recognition. Most people who learn about Ron Paul become major supporters.

70% of Americans want us out of Iraq and want change.

Ron Paul is only republican candidate against the war.

Ron Paul only needs about 30% vote from republicans sick of the war and abuse of powers to win in republican primaries.

Dr. Ron Paul is the man of integrity and courage that America needs at this time.

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.” John Quincy Adams

  • What country do you live in, because it's not the USA.

"we do need to preemptively strike" -- where in our Constitution does it say we can attack other countries that have no attacked us?

Start thinking that way, and that suddenly gives every country the right to violate international conventions, and prempetively strike the USA. How does that make us safer here at home?

You think we're the only ones who can build a nuke or a bio weapon? Many other countries already have such weapons. Russia has plenty of nukes. We are a threat to Russia -- should Russia then preemptively nuke us?

Why not? It makes sense, right? At least, according to your own belief system.

He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword. You will never find peace through war. We have thousands of years of history to demonstrate this. Why are you trying to recreate the wheel?

Don't you realize that war is a way of making corporations profits? War is a business. Don't preach that it's someone's God-given right to kill others when they feel threatened -- you're just spewing what corporations want you to spew. So they can get rich off your ignorance.

Either that, or you were paid to write this. If you were paid, you seriously disgust me. That's about as low as it gets.

  • I agree with the other guy. War is not good, and should only be used as a LAST RESORT. Pre-emptive war is especially bad. The logic can be used to pick fights with just about anyone the power elites would like us to go to wars with.

I'm also not buying the whole, OMG if we leave now it'll be such a bloodbath and chaos. No one knows for sure what might just happen. Hey, maybe Al-Qeida will leave considering they weren't there before we showed up. There is ONE THING however that we do know for certain: if we leave Iraq NO MORE AMERICANS WILL DIE in this war brought about by lies. And that certainty is enough for me to support the notion of bringing our troops home immediately.

  • Doug, you are young or naive or dumb or a fascist. You would have made a great, great NAZI.

Abolishing the parliament / congress and seizing power to go to war has been done several times in history (Hitler? You may have heard of him. He seized power, abolished the parliament, ignited WW II and 40 million died, much of Europe, and Russia were destroyed).

"Unfortunately, in our politically charged times, we do not have a Congress that is mature enough to take the responsibility of such a declaration."

Is that a Hitler quote? No, seriously did Hitler say that? Mein Kampf? I do not have time to look it up.

Congress made up of many people, who debate in open forum, discuss
issues and vote. Many in are self serving and corrupt. But the minds of many can be stronger then one guy. Democracy / Republic vs a tyrant

"We live in a very dangerous world and at times we do need to preemptively strike to preserve our freedom and the freedom of our friends around the world. "

Is this a quote from Hitler or Stalin? Seriously?

You should take your photo down from your website. Many will think you are a neo-nazi. Some Americans think the military is full of gangs bangers, thugs, baby killers and neo nazi. That was one reason why VETs got treated poorly after returning from Vietnam.

  • If we need to give the President the power to declare war, then get 3/4 of the congress to amend the Constitution. Until then, what we "should" do is irrelevant.

  • You seem pretty thoughtful. Watch this episode of Bill Moyers Journal then see if you think we need to stay in Iraq to make America safer.

And for the record Ron Paul has been right from day one regarding terrorism. As evidence I give you his statement from the floor of the house 9/25/2001.

You could not be more wrong. Watch and learn.
